Jali Atrium House

An interior concept arranged around a planted, sky-lit atrium, combining brass jali screens, terracotta brick, timber and water in a warm contemporary home.

Jali Atrium House, Concept Design by Ar. Sumon Mia

The idea

This interior concept explores how traditional elements can shape a contemporary home. Brass jali screens, terracotta brick and warm plaster are arranged around a planted atrium open to the sky, so that light, air and greenery reach the center of the house. The screens filter views and sunlight between spaces, giving privacy without closing rooms off.

The process

The study layers materials with a clear rhythm: polished concrete floors, textured terracotta walls, timber ceilings and geometric screens in brass. A sculptural spiral stair and a floating timber stair connect the levels around the atrium, while a shallow pool and indoor planting bring water and green into the living areas. Skylights and concealed cove lighting balance daylight with a warmer glow. The visuals were developed with AI-assisted tools to explore form, materials and atmosphere at concept stage.

The result

The images show living spaces that feel rooted yet open: patterned shadows from the jali falling across the floor, views through the screens into the planted courtyard, and soft furniture gathered around the water. The concept suggests how heritage craft and modern planning can come together in a calm, light-filled interior.
