Casa Alero street view: white gable house with a deep timber eave, glass upper floor, privacy wall and layered tropical planting

A contemporary timber-gable house for a warm climate.

Overview

Casa Alero is a concept proposal for a private family home on a compact urban plot in Spain, with a street frontage of about 12 meters. The design takes a familiar house shape, the simple gable, and opens it up: one side of the roof folds down into a deep timber eave (“alero” in Spanish) that shades the glass below and gives the house its character. White plaster volumes, warm wood and layered gardens create a calm, timeless home that feels private from the street but open to light and air inside.

Design concept

The house is designed to respond to a warm climate first. Instead of sealing the interior and relying on air conditioning, the design uses its form to manage sun, air and privacy:

  • Cross ventilation: openings on opposite sides and a double-height space let breezes move through the house and carry heat out.
  • Natural light: large glazing faces the garden side, protected by the timber eave, while smaller openings on exposed walls limit heat gain.
  • Privacy: a tall freestanding wall and raised planters screen the living spaces from the street without blocking light.
  • Green space: planting wraps the house at every level, from the front garden to the terrace planters, cooling the air and softening the facade.

Spaces

The house has three levels: ground +0.00, first +3.40 and second +6.40, with the ridge at +10.60 m.

  • Ground level: covered parking and main entrance, foyer, living area, dining area, kitchen with a separate wet kitchen, a guest bedroom, storage, a staff area, and a terrace opening to the garden.
  • Upper level: family area, master bedroom with walk-in closet and private bathroom, two further bedrooms, a shared bathroom and a balcony with garden views.
  • Under the roof: a bright double-height space below the timber ceiling.

Materials

Timber cladding and ceiling, white plaster, cast-in-place concrete, natural stone, clear glass in slim aluminum frames, a steel structure with steel handrails, a standing-seam metal roof, and integrated planters with tropical and Mediterranean planting.
