Cantilevered Concrete Waterfront House
A design study for a concrete waterfront house that cantilevers out over the water, carried by a single sculpted pier, developed from hand sketch to photorealistic visualization.

The idea
Most houses sit on their site. This one reaches out over the water. The design study began with a simple question: what if the structure itself became the architecture? Instead of hiding how the building stands up, the house puts its load path on display. Three concrete volumes extend from a single tapered pier planted at the water’s edge, so the engineering becomes the signature of the design rather than something to disguise.
The house engages the water directly. A floating dock and a sheltered threshold beneath the cantilever turn the edge of the site into the arrival point of the home.
The process
The project started on paper, as a hand-drawn organic study. The sketch works through the questions that decide whether a cantilever is believable: the junction where the floating volume meets its support, a typical deep-set window detail, a precast concrete stair and the interface between structural systems.
Much of the final form was already present in that first drawing: the twisting support, the oval void beneath the building and the layered massing above. The design was then modeled in SketchUp and 3ds Max, drawn up in AutoCAD, and rendered in Corona, with lighting and material studies focused on the texture of board-formed concrete against water and glass. Post-production was completed in Photoshop.
The result
The visualization shows a house that feels both bold and calm. Heavy, sculpted concrete is balanced by floor-to-ceiling glazing around the stair core and living spaces, so light moves through the building even at its most dramatic point. At water level, an oval opening turns a structural necessity into a covered, cave-like arrival from the dock.
The study shows how a confident structural idea, tested early by hand, can carry through to a clear and convincing final image.
